The Art-Deco weekend in Napier is an event that should most certainly be on your bucket list. This fun filled 1930’s weekend is held each year in February and 40,000 visitors from around the world visit to be transported back into the 1930’s.
The first Art-Deco weekend was held in 1989 and was the brainchild of a few enthusiastic locals who wanted to preserve the 1930’s history of the region. In 1931 there was a horrific earthquake that saw the buildings flattened and 261 lives lost.
It is celebrated as an international weekend of fun, music and dining. There are a vast array of restaurants and cuisines, vineyard tours, trolley derbies, street parties, tours of the unique buildings, 200+ vintage cars and jazz and big band concerts at the Marine Parade Sound Shell.
There are events for all ages with thousands of people enjoying themselves in 1930’s attires and glamour – Marlene and I go back every second year as it is a real highlight that I can certainly recommend to all.
One of the specific highlights this year was going to the wonderful Craggy Range Vineyard. Dinner with world class Craggy Range wines in their outdoor dining area looking over the Tukituki River as the sun goes down, under the watchful eye of the surrounding cliffs of Te-Mate Peak. Magnificent.
This international experience is only a few hours away in Napier the hub of the Hawkes Bay. For further information on Art Deco weekend visit www.artdeconapier.com
