As we listen to the major news topics about rising house prices and housing affordability in Auckland, we tend to put to the back of our minds a number of happenings in the farming sector that have a major effect on our national economy and our wonderful regions around New Zealand.
Last year we saw milk powder prices plummet, the downturn to farmers’ income and the dramatic affect it had on our overall economy. It was great to hear last week that Fonterra are lifting their pay out from $5.25 to $5.75 – nowhere near the prices they were receiving 2-3 years ago and not enough to say we are back to the halcyon days, but the increase will inject (as an example) $48 million into Northland and $58 million into Taranaki. This will certainly enhance employment, morale, debt reduction and positive spending. The NZ dollar increased against the US dollar and this positive movement in the global milk products is a plus for all of us.
Along with the Kiwifruit export growth, strong beef and lamb prices, and the positive diversification within our farming sector into so many new global market opportunities – our very important rural sector brings a positive outlook for regional New Zealand. However, in raising the positives of the rural sector and regional New Zealand, spare a thought for the farmers of North Canterbury who continue to go through a drought of major significance which, for close to two years, has seen them with virtually little or no rain resulting in a lower return on stock prices, minimal feed available and despondent farmers. So as we consider those who have the emotional struggle with housing issues, spare a thought for our farming community in North Canterbury as they are having a real tough time. I have been through North Canterbury recently and have seen their challenges first hand.
The important message when we hear about the negative goings-on in here and around the world, is that yes, we have challenges, but the reality is that we have a great country. We can enjoy it and be a part of the community, raise our families and remember that every day, somewhere around our great country there are good things happening.
